How to detox without the drama!

No fasting, no bathroom floor moments, no praying to see another day required

Because here’s what you might not know - your body already knows how to detox.

It has specific organs dedicated to the job in hand:

The liver. The kidneys. The skin. The gut.

They work 24/7 - no prompting, celery juice or cabbage soup required.

Detox ≠ punishment

First up, detoxing doesn’t mean starving.

It doesn’t mean giving up solids or being chained to the toilet.

And it definitely doesn’t mean buying a €90 powder endorsed by a fitness influencer with a six-pack and zero qualifications.

Instead, think of detox as the art of clearing out the literal and metaphorical cobwebs in your diet and life so your body (and brain) can function better.

If you’re feeling a bit foggy, sluggish, or just a bit ‘yuck’, and you want to ‘purge’ the toxins from your body (without going full monk-mode) this is the blog post for you.

Simple daily shifts that support real detox

1. Eat more detox food ‘superheroes’

Spring is a great time to lean into lighter meals and seasonal foods that naturally support your body’s detox systems. Certain vegetables and herbs can gently encourage liver and kidney function, help regulate digestion, and support natural detox pathways are:

🟢 Bitter greens (e.g. rocket, chicory, dandelion leaves)
– Stimulate bile flow and digestion

🥦 Cruciferous vegetables (e.g. broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, radishes)
– Supports the liver to detox oestrogen

🧄 Sulphur-rich foods (e.g., garlic, leeks, spring onions, onions)
– Activates key detox pathways to detoxify ammonia and sulphites

🍠 Beets & asparagus
– Promotes healthy bile flow for removal of toxins and kidney function

🌱 Sea vegetables (e.g., wakame, nori, dulse)
– Rich in minerals; helps bind and remove heavy metals

🌿 Fresh herbs & spices (e.g., parsley, coriander, ginger, turmeric)
– Support liver health, provides detox nutrients, reduces inflammation, and aids circulation

🍋 Lemon, lime, and vinegars (in moderation)
– Encourage digestive enzymes and alkalises the system

See! You don’t need a juice cleanse or fancy powders to support detox.

2. Fibre, Fibre, Fibre

Your digestive system needs to be working smoothly to clear out toxins properly - that means one to two well-formed bowel movements every day. Fibre is key here. Think of it as your internal broom, sweeping waste and toxins out through the bowel. Aim for at least 30 grams of fibre a day to keep things moving.

If you're not going regularly, toxins and hormone metabolites can hang around and get reabsorbed… and become more harmful.

3. Tox swaps

Processed foods, too much booze, plastic-wrapped everything, and synthetic fragrances add to your toxic burden. Swap what you can, where you can. Little changes add up:

  • Use a reusable, stainless steel water bottle (your liver will thank you).

  • Switch to non-toxic cleaning products — I’ve got a guide for you [link].

  • Go fragrance-free with skincare. Check out clean brands like Codex or make your own oil based cleanser with sweet almond oil and frankincense.

  • Eat real food more, and processed food way less. There’s no shame in a shortcut now and then, but remember your body runs on instructions — and real food delivers them. Nutrients are the code that keeps everything working smoothly and as it should.

4. Epsom salts & dry brushing

Dry brushing helps get your lymph moving — which is key for clearing toxins from your system. Epsom salt baths deliver magnesium straight through the skin, a key mineral in supporting your detox pathways, easing muscle tension, and helping you unwind.

5. Stay hydrated (but make it tasty)

Some toxins leave the body through urine, so don’t skimp on water. Water’s ideal, but if you find it a tad boring, add lemon, cucumber and fresh herbs like mint or elderberry.

Herbal teas can be used as a backup source of hydration

Faves for spring detoxing:

Nettle — A powerhouse plant: rich in iron, calcium, and other trace minerals that support energy, detoxification, and hormonal balance. Traditionally used as a blood cleanser, it’s also brilliant for skin health and clearing breakouts linked to sluggish detox pathways.

Dandelion root — Gentle but effective liver support. It helps stimulate bile flow, which is crucial for breaking down fats and flushing out toxins. Great if you’re feeling sluggish, bloated, or your digestion’s a bit off. It’s like giving your liver a nudge in the right direction.

6. Move daily, not manically
You don’t need a punishing HIIT session to support detox. Gentle, regular movement - walking, yoga, stretching, even a dance in the kitchen - helps your lymphatic system do its job and keeps everything flowing. It’s about consistency, not intensity.

7. Sleep like your health depends on it (because it does)
Your body does its best detox work overnight - clearing waste, repairing cells, balancing hormones. Aim for 7–9 hours of solid sleep, and wind down properly: lights low, devices off, no scrolling till midnight.

When you pay attention to all those things, and you’re consistent, your body will do the rest!

A word to the wise

The last time I did a 7 day cleanse was so long ago and gruelling, I haven’t dared revisited it! Part of what made it so tough was I didn’t know how many variants I had on my detox genes - let alone that I would need certain nutrients to help them - so they could help me to detox efficiently in spite of them.

Thankfully, I know it now! And that information will stand to me for life if I use it.

Nutrigenomics testing is one of the most empowering tools I’ve used for clients (and for myself) over the years.

Once you know your genetic strengths and weaknesses, you can tailor your diet and lifestyle around them,

optimise your detox potential, offset health risks, and improve your overall energy and resilience for life - no guesswork, no wasted effort.
