Vaginal Microbiome Testing

What is vaginal microbiome testing?

The vaginal microbiome is the community of bacteria that naturally lives in and protects the vaginal environment, and it's closely connected to both hormone health and the gut microbiome. Vaginal microbiome testing analyses that bacterial community directly, rather than treating each flare-up as a standalone, unexplained event.

An imbalance in vaginal bacteria may contribute to recurring symptoms, fertility challenges, and ongoing inflammation. Testing may be appropriate for women experiencing:

  • Recurrent thrush

  • Recurrent bacterial vaginosis

  • Vaginal discomfort

  • Fertility concerns

  • Pregnancy planning

  • Postmenopausal vaginal symptoms

Why does bacterial vaginosis or thrush keep coming back?

Repeated treatment for the same symptom often clears the immediate flare without addressing why the underlying bacterial balance keeps tipping the same way. Rather than repeatedly treating symptoms as they resurface, vaginal microbiome testing may help identify an underlying microbial pattern driving them, so we can work toward restoring balance rather than managing the same recurrence indefinitely.

How is vaginal microbiome testing connected to fertility and hormones?

The vaginal microbiome doesn't operate in isolation. It's closely connected to both hormone health and the gut microbiome, and an imbalance can play a role in fertility challenges and ongoing inflammation that extends beyond vaginal symptoms alone. For women preparing for pregnancy or navigating unexplained fertility difficulty, perimenopause or menopause, vaginal health testing can offer extra insight as part of a much larger picture.

  • Examine the microbial terrain, not just the most recent flare-up, since recurrence itself is meaningful information.

  • Look at the underlying microbial balance, rather than treating each episode as unrelated to the last.

  • Connect it to your wider hormone and gut health, since these systems influence each other and symptoms more than is recognised.

  • Build a plan aimed at restoring balance, not just managing symptoms as they resurface.

Where vaginal microbiome testing fits into your care

Vaginal microbiome testing is one of several functional tests I use within my programmes, depending on what your individual symptom picture is telling us, or is missing. If you’re interested in exploring functional testing, as part of supporting your hormonal health, check out the programme pages or book a free call.
